Steven Peabody Contemporary Artist

The object of my art is to explore the creative process using symbols of reality and fantasy to produce paintings of transcendental thought.

Biomorphic forms and obsessions with borders permeate my work throughout my career. The figurative, turned into biomorphic, then geometric, & finally, primitive gave me a direct connection with my preconceived titles/ideas. The borders went through a mandalic, diamond, and sacred geometry, which turned into peripheral shaped canvases in 82-present.

The four main styles I’ve followed:

 Figurative - 66 -73.

 Biomorpic 73 -present.

 Geometric  81 —96.

 Primitive  89 - present.

Steven Peabody was born November 14, 1947 in Manhattan.  He attended the School of Visual Arts in NYC, NY.  Studying with, amongst other artists, Gil Stone who introduced him to classical layering techniques utilizing under painting and over painting, from the Renaissance period which had a profound influence on his artistic evolution. After art school I became fixated with how much the border of a canvas influenced the interior of it. And ultimately developed the peripheral shaped series to allow greater ease of gazing at the subject to hold the subject in focus at the same time filing the parameter thereby allowing transcendence or oneness with the art.
Retuning to figurative work and experimenting with color bleeds and auras, in an effort to create luminous figures, he now works with composite figures and symbols to develop paintings expressive of the holistic human condition.
